Summary of Programs

Infant Program

We love babies at GBLC!

Great Beginnings Learning Center implements continuity of care for infants and toddlers ages 6 weeks – 18 months old.

Infants remain with the same two to three teachers until they are 18 months old, transitioning to a toddler room where they remain with those same teachers until they transition to preschool.

These approaches to continuity of care provide children, families and staff with consistency, predictability and opportunities to develop long‐term relationships.

Toddler Program

Happy toddlers!

Our toddlers are transitioned to the Toddler Room at 18 months old.

Toddler classroom schedules are more responsive to the whole group experience, although flexibility for individual needs is still a primary consideration throughout the day. Below is an example of the daily schedule:

  • 6:30-8:30am Greet families, free play, developmental activities
  • 8:30-9:30am Breakfast snack, diapering, toileting
  • 9:30-11:00am Gross motor/outside time, developmental activities (small motor, music, language, sensory)
  • 11:00am-12:00pm Group time, hand washing, lunch, diapering, toileting
  • 12:00-2:30pm Naptime, free play
  • 2:30-3:30pm Hand washing, afternoon snack, diapering, toileting, free play
  • 3:30-6:00pm Developmental activities, outside play, clean up, toileting, snack, departure

Transitions

Most children who are ready to transition to the next age group will do so in early or late summer. Staff and families will work together to make these transitions go as smooth as possible.

With our continuity of care program in place, infant and toddler teachers will move together with their children to the next developmental age group. Once the toddlers reach three years of age, they will move to the preschool age group and will be with a whole new group of teachers and children.

When transitioning to the next developmental age group, teachers will accompany children to their new rooms. For the transition to the preschool rooms, the teachers will stay with the children the entire time at the very beginning and will gradually decrease the amount of time with them. If needed, we will do this transition over a period of about a month.

Before transition time, parents will be notified of the transition, what class their child will be in, what children will be moving with them to their new classroom, and who their new teachers will be.

Procedure:

• Current teaching staff will take child to new room, gradually increasing the time spent in the room until the child can stay without support.

Example:

~Explore new room for 20-30 minutes
~Visit during breakfast or snack and free play, 30-60 minutes
~Visit during activities, explore playground, 1-2 hours
~Visit during morning activities; teacher and children eat lunch in new room
~Teacher takes child to room for morning activities, returning for lunch and nap; child and teacher return to current room after nap

• Teachers meet to discuss Teacher to Teacher Transition information
• Current teaching staff introduces parents to new teaching staff
• Current teaching staff moves all extra clothes and supplies to new room

Preschool Program

Learning is fun!

Preschool classrooms reflect the increasing independence of children and emphasize their social nature.

Schedules still offer the flexibility that individual children may need, but are based on group involvement and activity.

Great Beginnings Learning Center offers Before and After School Care as well as drop in care for your school ager.  We are conveniently located next to Harrison Street Elementary School. Our school-age program provides before and after school care, care on days that the schools are closed (but yet we are still open).

The School-Age Program is designed for children who are in school all day and need a secure environment before school hours, 6:30am to the start of school, and after school hours from 2:00pm-6:00pm, while their parents are at work.

The Before School Program offers breakfast at 7:00am and the children are allowed to relax, read a book, do homework, or play a game until transportation to school is required.

The After School Program has a teacher that provides homework assistance from 3:00-5:00pm, Monday-Friday, with free choice options after homework is completed.

On the days that school is out, with the exception of summer, we provide full- and part- time care, if a parent chooses. Please call to find out more about what we offer and to schedule a tour.  Contact us at 740-936-5336.
