Curriculum

Learning is fun at Great Beginnings Learning Center!

Learning is fun at Great Beginnings Learning Center!

Great Beginnings Learning Center is using a childcare curriculum that is play-based and child-centered.

Initially we will be using the Innovations Comprehensive Preschool Curriculum, by Kay Albrecht and Linda G. Miller, and will be using it in conjunction with Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards. (These are currently being revised, but the draft form can be reviewed on the Ohio Department of Education website.)

We may add other components to supplement this curriculum, but it is a very good child- and family-focused curriculum.

Innovations is an encompassing curriculum that works together to benefit the child in all aspects of growing and learning. Observation and Assessment will come first, so nothing happens to the child before the teacher learns through observation where the child is developmentally. It embraces the inter-relationship among teacher’s planning, the child’s interest and response, child development, the child’s family context and culture, and the reactions and interactions of adults and other children.

The other aspect of curriculum that is embraced is the open-ended nature of the process. When activities or experiences are presented to very young children, we never know what they are going to do with the experience! Because we can never predict where a child’s interest might take us, we need to be prepared to consider alternatives so we can recognize them when they emerge.  The other focus is on the child’s response as a cue to what to do next or where to go next. This is the dance between teacher and child- the gentle interplay that occurs over and over again during the day. Following children’s interests is at the heart of emergent curriculum.” –Kay Albrecht

Counting smiles!

Innovations curriculum is a unique plan that will not only follow the child’s interests and development, but also fosters the development of relationships between the child, caregiver, and families.

Here at Great Beginnings Learning Center, our priority is the growth, development, and security of all of the children in our care. We want you to “be” a part of your child’s early education and will do the best to keep you informed of your child’s progress, through assessments, portfolios, conferences, and daily conversations.

We would also like to create a more personal, homey environment where were can plan activities that will include all of the children, families, staff, and the community.
